Video Kills: Magnolia Mountain – “Hellbound Train”

Last month, the Cincinnati-based Americana outfit Magnolia Mountain released their second full-length, the pretty much massive Redbird Green, following up on the promise of 2009′s solid debut effort Nothing As It Was. Redbird Green features the cream of Cincinnati’s folk and roots-rock crop; members of The Tillers, The Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, The Kentucky Struts, The Joneses, and Lagniappe help flesh out the album’s 17 tracks. I’m waiting for the album to arrive on vinyl before giving it a formal review, but here’s the video for album’s penultimate track “Hellbound Train” to tide us both over. Continue reading

Video Kills: Blitzen Trapper – “Taking It Easy Too Long” (new song)

Releasing an album as brilliant as Destroyer of the Void would be enough for most bands, but not the freakishly prolific and consistently excellent Blitzen Trapper. Earlier this week, Trapper-frontman Eric Earley debuted the new track “Taking It Easy Too Long” at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. Check out the video, courtesy of Okeastron, and check back on for our formal review of Destroyer of the Void. Continue reading

Video Kills: Bonnie “Prince” Billy – “Hombre Sencillo”

As first reported back in March, The Grassroots Record Company and the dudes and dudettes behind (((folkYEAH!))) recently put together an excellent tribute to Graham Nash’s seminal 1971 solo LP, Songs for Beginners. Bonnie “Prince” Billy scored what might just be the highlight of the album with his re-imagining of the song “Simple Man,” which has now been transformed into a lovely video by Britt Govea and Brian Ziffer. Don’t believe me? Well, then watch the video and judge for yourself. Continue reading

Video Kills: Bad Veins – “Falling Tide”

Yesterday, anthemic indie-rockers Bad Veins released the official video for “Falling Tide,” one of the standout tracks from their 2009 debut LP.

Directed by BV’s own Benjamin Davis, along with Yusef Quotah and the PROJECTMILL crew, the video comes hot on the heels of the band’s Outliers EP (released on June 15th). As the name implies, Outliers features a quartet of tracks that didn’t make the band’ debut for one reason or another. It’s easy to see why most of these low key tracks were left on the cutting room floor, with the one notable exception being live standout “Fake Baby,” which finally gets the full production it deserves as the lead track on this odds-and-ends collection. Video Kills: Dawes – “When My Time Comes”

Although it’s only mid-May, Cincinnati’s MidPoint Indie Summer Concert Series will be upon us before you know it. It’s in this spirit that we present the official video for “When My Time Comes,” arguably the standout track from Dawes’ superb debut LP, North Hills. Dawes stops by Cincinnati’s Fountain Square for a free performance on August 6th, but you festival-minded folk can also catch them at Bonnaroo next month. You can find out more about MidPoint’s Indie Summer series here and more about MPMF-proper here. Continue reading
