Bright Eyes To Release New Album in 2011

Bright Eyes – that’s right, Bright Eyes and not the Mystic Valley Band or a solo Conor Oberst! - are currently preparing for the release of their 7th (or 10th, depending on what you count) release for indie powerhouse Saddle Creek Records. The … Continue reading

Album Review: Cockfighter – Universal Field Theory Blues

Cockfighter is a somewhat elusive new Californian “buzz” band whose overall sound is difficult to pin down. Universal Field Theory Blues, their first album, rings out of the aether like an urgent message. About what and to whom I’m not … Continue reading

HotChaCha at The Comet

The Cleveland all-girl band HotChaCha will rattle Northside’s favorite laid-back watering hole The Comet this Friday the 13th. Since HotChaCha is a little bit dance, a little bit punk and apparently fully hot (according to the gospel of countless male … Continue reading

Preview: The War on Drugs Return w/ Daytrotter Session and Forthcoming EP

Come with me, if you will, back to the halcyon days of 2008… back when four plucky Cincinnatians launched an independent music e-zine called TRACER Magazine (why would we name a website TRACER Magazine? That’s a whole other post, my friends). Back in those carefree days, one of the first bands TRACER profiled was a Philadelphia outfit called The War on Drugs. The band’s debut LP, Wagonwheel Blues, was one of our favorite albums of ’08… but things have been pretty quiet on The War-front ever since. Continue reading

TRACER’s Guide to the 2010 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival

One week from today, Amanda and I will once again make the trek to Manchester, Tennessee for the ninth annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. In the past, the weeks leading up this festival have seen us anxious and excited for four full days of live music in a generally pastoral setting. This year, though, Bonnaroo boasts a particularly uninspired (or, if I’m feeling gracious, “safe”) lineup, with Dave Matthews Band and Kings of Leon serving as the fest’s top-tier headliners. Now, that’s certainly better than Lollapalooza’s mind-boggling trinity of Soundgarden, Green Day, and Lady Gaga… but I wouldn’t exactly call that a compliment.

As always, though, Bonnaroo’s 2010 lineup features something for nearly everyone, including plenty of exciting acts (new and old) to make up for this year’s vanilla headliners. Here’s a quick rundown of what we’re most excited for. Continue reading

TRACER’s Guide to the 32nd Annual Taste of Cincinnati

Confession time: while I was busy wasting hour after hour roaming through the wild west of Rockstar Games’ so-amazing-it-hurts Red Dead Redemption during the last week and a half, Memorial Day and the annual Taste of Cincinnati simply snuck up on me. Gah!

Anyway… started in 1979 (the same year that I was started – zing!), Taste of Cincinnati is the nation’s longest running culinary arts festival, occupying much of downtown Cincinnati each Memorial Day weekend. If you’re like me, though, the culinary offerings come in at a distant second to the event’s musical offerings, which generally feature a wide range of local, regional, and national acts on multiple stages throughout the weekend.

This year’s Taste of Cincinnati is no different, featuring performances by well over 75 acts. It’s supposed to be a gorgeous weekend, so make an effort to see the following and you won’t be disappointed. Continue reading

Looking Ahead: A Season of New (Good) Albums

The list of artists set to release full-length albums this spring/summer is pretty impressive: Arcade Fire, Band of Horses, Blitzen Trapper, Broken Social Scene, Delorean, Horse Feathers, Jonsi, LCD Soundsytem, The National, The New Pornographers, Roky Erickson with Okkervil River… and those just scratch the surface! Is there a rule of three years when it comes to great new albums that I’m unaware of? Because for some reason, a couple of these acts had a big impact on my life in 2007 as well (Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible and LCD Soundsystem’s Sound of Silver quickly come to mind). Continue reading
